about
Most of the lyrics for this song were written in a small room above a bar in Bangkok's Chinatown in 2019. The tune and choruses were written in Syracuse, New York, after the pandemic hit and we realized our return to Thailand wouldn't be happening anytime soon. I recorded the vocals and guitar while visiting Minneapolis, Minnesota during the summer of 2021, then sent the song to Frank in Frankfort, Germany, where he recorded the rest. Then I brought it along on our return to Thailand, where it was mixed by Matthew Fischer in Bangkok.
lyrics
Sitting alone at an old teak desk
writing by the light of a cast iron lamp
faucet drips, fan spins overhead
a bottle of Sangsom and a stained notepad
paint chips off where the plaster is cracked
shutters stuck open with a broken clasp
A weird kind of sadness hangs in the air
stale as the dust that covers the stairs
If only in our dreams
Oh, there is no place I'd rather be
Down on the soi, below your window
shophouse crumbles, an old man smokes
wearing no shhurt in the sweltering night
selling satay next to his wife
plastic chairs stacked next to the street carts & rats
watch your step as the bus rages past
nothing so sweet as the wind off the khlong
if that ain't right, I'd rather be wrong
If only in our dreams
Oh, there is no place I'd rather be
It’s time to get back to Fatty’s Bar
ten minutes by motorbike or two hours by car
or just take the subway then walk for awhile
the Apples will dance and sing with a smile
hip young butterfly, back from Saigon
your Dutch friend from Groningen, y'all wander 'til dawn
taxi gets lost on your way home
yelling about yellow shirts and guns and bombs
guess you don't know what he really said
halfway to the airport, so far from your bed
If only in our dreams
Oh, there is no place I'd rather be
